University of Eastern Finland is one of the largest universities in Finland having about 15 000 students and 2800 members of staff. UEF is a multidisciplinary university offering education in more than 100 major subjects. Four faculties of UEF are the Philosophical Faculty, the Faculty of Science and Forestry, the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies Faculty. The key interdisciplinary research areas of UEF are based on the four global challenges: Ageing, lifestyles and health; Learning in a digitised society; Cultural encounters, mobilities and borders; and Environmental change and sufficiency of natural resources.
The main research areas of the Department of Chemistry in UEF are Materials chemistry and Bioeconomy/biomedicine. Our department specializes in material solutions for industrial applications. The work is based on fundamental research. The research groups have extensive experience in networking with international and domestic research partners and close contacts to industrial operators.
Our catalyst research group has a long-term experience for the industrial collaboration in the field of emission control of automotive applications. The main focus of research activities has been on preparation, characterization and reactivity studies of the catalyst systems. Of particular importance has been the understanding of structure – property relationships. Available modern and versatile laboratory facilities and instrumentation of the department supports well the catalyst development. Catalyst chemistry for after treatment systems has a direct connection to Aerosols, climate change and human health which is one of the top-level international research areas of UEF.
